I have four computers on which
I run Caldera eDesktop 2.4.
This OS gives the user a
full-featured UNIX clone operating system with
user selectable desktop interfaces with the
look of Windows 9x, BeOS, Mac or KDE.
Since Linux clones UNIX, it comes complete with
true multi-tasking and
multi-user
(6 virtual terminals at the main console plus
serial ports). The X-Window server comes with
drivers for many cards that use accelerated
graphics. I have my system configured for 65,536
colors with Desktop at a resolution of
1024x768.
It comes complete with both clients and servers for
SLIP, PPP, 'ftp', 'gopher', 'finger', 'telnet',
the Web and DNS.
It also can execute Internet-specific commands such
as 'whois', 'ping' and 'traceroute'.
It also includes NetScape
4.51 for Linux which looks virtually identical to
the Windows 9x implementation.
I gave up on Windows 95 because it crashed 8-10 times
per day.
I have yet to see Linux crash even once.
Caldera eDesktop 2.4 also includes the StarOffice
suite and WordPerfect 8.
My own z80a emulator also runs under Linux at 158 MHz!
The emulator runs the CP/M 2.2 operating system under
which I can bring up WordStar 4.0 in less than
a half second.
What fun--WordStar running on CP/M 2.2 running on my
z80a emulator running on Linux running on my 1GHz
tower computer!
My own pdp8e emulator also runs the DEC OS/8 operating
system under Linux at 60 MHz (three times the speed
of a real PDP-8/e).
